Gathering Youth Voices to Discuss Global Resilience

Sub-Forum Seven, themed "Building Global Resilience Together: Governance Responsibility and Action Initiatives of Contemporary Youth", was held on the morning of October 18 at the Yifu First Lecture Hall and the Lide Building at the Zhongguancun Campus of Renmin University of China. This forum was jointly hosted by Renmin University of China, the Universities Alliance of Young Ambassadors, and the People's Government of Tongzhou District, Beijing Municipality. It was organized by the School of Foreign Languages, the Youth League Committee, and the Language Center for International Communication and International Competence at Renmin University of China.

Liu Kai, Deputy Secretary-General of the All-China Youth Federation, and Wang Yi, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee and Vice President of Renmin University of China, attended and addressed the opening ceremony. Nearly 300 faculty members and students from RUC and over ten other Beijing universities, along with more than 60 international, Hong Kong, Macao, and Taiwan student representatives from 24 countries and regions, participated in the event. They engaged in in-depth exchanges on global issues such as public health resilience, cultural resilience, social resilience, and technological resilience, as well as building resilient cities and promoting economic resilience. They collectively voiced a powerful call for contemporary youth participation in global governance.

In her address, Wang Yi emphasized that Renmin University of China has always embraced the vision and responsibility of “advancing human progress and promoting world harmony”. The university actively implements President Xi Jinping's Four Global Initiatives and focuses on cultivating leadership talent committed to the shared values of humanity. She highlighted that this forum serves as a vivid practice of responding to the question of our times from a youth perspective—"How to achieve sustainability in socio-economic development when undergoing change on a scale unseen in a century"—thereby laying the cornerstone for a more resilient future.

Liu Kai noted that, as the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development enters its final five-year sprint, global governance needs to listen to youth voices and unleash their potential more than ever. She called on young people around the world to safeguard peace and security and become "stabilizers" of global resilience; to champion youth development and become "engines" driving global vitality; and to promote mutual learning among civilizations and become "bridges" that bring hearts closer and overcome barriers of understanding.

Launching Youth Initiatives, Showcasing International Vision

The forum officially released a thematic report titled Building Global Resilience Together: Governance Responsibility and Action Initiatives of Contemporary Youth. Researched and written independently by young students, the report systematically sets out RUC students’proposals and action pathways regarding global issues, fully demonstrating the younger generation’s international vision and intercultural communication skills.

In the roundtable dialogue session, young students from China, Brazil, Russia, Kazakhstan, the United States, and other countries, together with faculty representatives, engaged in multi-dimensional dialogues on global resilience governance, sparking a vibrant exchange and convergence of ideas among youth from diverse cultural backgrounds.

A Dual-Track Approach: Two Workshops Deepen Practical Exploration

To deepen the discussion on these topics, the forum featured two parallel workshops: the "International Competence Practice Workshop" and the "Understanding China · Pioneer Practice Workshop".

International Competence Practice Workshop: Multi-dimensional Perspectives Spark Innovative Thinking

The "International Competence Practice Workshop" provided a platform for young students to engage deeply in global governance through innovative agendas and interactive formats. Held simultaneously in eight venues in RUC’s Lide Building, the workshop featured in-depth discussions on six cutting-edge topics: promoting resilient economic development through industrial transformation and green innovation; building resilient cities through smart cities and risk governance; enhancing public health resilience through digital healthcare and coordinated innovation; strengthening cultural resilience through intercultural communication and digital heritage; promoting social resilience through poverty elimination and inclusive growth; and securing technological resilience through cybersecurity and data sovereignty.

The workshop was hosted by faculty members from the School of Foreign Languages of Renmin University of China and invited international faculty members and experts from partner universities to serve as discussants. The venues focused on student proposal presentations and guided students to systematically evaluate the feasibility and implementation of proposals from the perspectives of policymakers, technology developers, NGOs, and enterprises by role-playing and multilateral discussions. This effectively cultivated students’ critical thinking, interdisciplinary integration, and multicultural collaboration skills.

“Understanding China” Pioneer Practice Workshop: Multilingual Narratives Convey the Strong Message of the Times

The "Understanding China · Pioneer Practice Workshop" was held in Room 912 of the Lide Building, showcasing the achievements from social practice teams organized by RUC’s School of Foreign Languages. These teams visited Jiaxing, Hangzhou, Fuzhou, Quanzhou, Wuyishan, Nanjing, Ningbo, Xinjiang, and other locations. Combining field research with multilingual micro-documentaries as their main format, they vividly presented China’s stories and experiences in fields such as red culture, the Silk Road, urban governance, and border development.

The workshop incorporated outstanding projects from the "First Global Development Public Policy Youth Innovation Competition" and attracted representatives from Beijing Normal University, Beihang University, Beijing Institute of Technology, and other universities to share their innovative practices in the dissemination of intangible cultural heritage, the passing on of red culture, and the integration of Party building with international communication. This showcased university students’ strong sense of mission and professional competence in intercultural communication.

The forum centered on the themes of "Youth Leadership, Intellectual Exchange and Action Initiatives," and emphasized interaction and hands-on practice. It not only provided a high-level platform for intellectual dialogue among university youth but also further inspired their sense of responsibility and creativity in engaging in global governance and contributing Chinese wisdom.

Additionally, four student representatives from RUC’s School of Foreign Languages presented the outcomes of the “Understanding China” Pioneer Practice program. Focusing on three major themes—" Carrying Forward the Red Legacy", " Telling China’s Stories Well" and " Nurturing Love for the Motherland"—they shared their reflections on how to use language as a bridge and practice as a foundation to present a truthful, multi-dimensional and comprehensive picture of China to the world.

Facing the Future: Cultivating New Talent with Global Competence

In a new era, Renmin University of China is actively building a new paradigm for talent cultivation that bridges China and the world and combines patriotism with global competence. Drawing on innovative platforms like the Center for International Communication and International Competence, the university is dedicated to integrating youth development into national strategies and international agendas. It aims not only to train outstanding envoys who can help the world "understand China" but also to nurture future pioneers who excel at "engaging in dialogue with the world".

Looking ahead, Renmin University of China will continue to join hands with young people around the world to forge solid consensus in a time of uncertainty, and to contribute youthful wisdom and “RUC proposals” to advancing the cause of world peace and development and building a community with a shared future for mankind.
