Department of English
Department of English began admitting undergraduate students in 1990. In 1986, it was granted the authority to confer master's degrees, and in 2011, the authority to confer doctoral degrees. Its commitment is to cultivate highly skilled English professionals who can fulfill the mission of the times to revitalize the nation and become pioneers in building a strong country. The department admits approximately 40 undergraduate students, 30 academic master's students, 30 professional master's students, and 10 doctoral students each year. Currently, it has 27 full-time faculty members, including 9 professors with 1 being a level-2 professor(Professors in China fall into 4 levels), 9 associate professors, and 9 lecturers. 93% of the department hold doctoral degrees, with 30% of them graduating from high-caliber universities overseas. Additionally, it comprises 13 part-time teachers and 2 foreign language instructors. It boasts abundant expertise, a rational structure, and exceptional professionalism.
Over the past five years, it has secured 11 vertical research projects at the provincial and ministerial levels and 12 university-level research projects. These include 1 major project funded by the National Social Science Foundation, 5 general projects, 1 foreign translation project, and 1 special project. It has published 155 academic papers, 35 academic works, and 7 textbooks and dictionaries. Moreover, it has been honored multiple times with awards such as the Outstanding Research Achievement Award and the Excellent Doctoral Dissertation Adviser Award by the university.
Department of English actively engages in in-depth exchanges and cooperation with world-renowned universities. It has formally signed inter-institutional cooperation agreements with institutions such as the University of Massachusetts Boston, University of Kent, Deakin University, Center for Applied Linguistics in the United States, University of Auckland, and Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey.
Department of Russian
Department of Russian began admitting undergraduate students majoring in Russian in 1987 and obtained the authority to grant master's degrees in Russian language and literature in 1998. the department admits approximately 15 undergraduate students and 8 master's students each year. Currently, the department comprises 9 full-time faculty members, including 6 associate professors, with 56% holding doctoral degrees. Additionally, it has 3 non-tenure-track faculty members, including one high-end foreign expert and two foreign language instructors. Within this second-level discipline, the department offers two research directions: Russian linguistics and Russian literature and culture. Over the past five years, the faculty members have achieved significant research outcomes, publishing 2 articles in core journals, and 11 articles in overseas journals, producing 2 monographs, 9 translations, and 3 textbooks, and securing funding for 2 provincial and teaching and research projects. Committed to fostering global partnerships, the department has signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement with Lomonosov Moscow State University. Over the past five years, 69 students of the department have participated in joint training, exchange programs, and summer/winter exchange projects, with approximately 83% of undergraduate students and 65% of master's students having experienced exchange programs lasting one semester or longer.
Department of Japanese
Department of Japanese began admitting undergraduate students majoring in Japanese in 1993 and obtained the authority to grant master's degrees in Japanese language and literature in 1996, followed by the authority to grant doctoral degrees in Japanese language and literature in 2011. It admits approximately 18 undergraduate students, 8 master's students, and 2 doctoral students each year. Presently, the department consists of 10 full-time faculty members, including 1 professor and 6 associate professors, with 80% holding doctoral degrees. Additionally, it has 6 non-tenure-track faculty members, including one high-end foreign expert, one visiting professor, two foreign language instructors, and two course instructors. Within this second-level discipline, the department offers three research directions: Japanese literature studies, Japanese cultural studies, and Japanese linguistics studies. Over the past five years, the full-time faculty of the department have achieved remarkable research outcomes, publishing 18 articles in core journals, 9 articles in overseas journals, and producing 2 monographs, 8 authored works, 2 translations, and 5 textbooks. It has secured funding for 7 provincial and ministerial-level teaching and research projects and won 1 provincial and ministerial-level teaching and research award. Dedicated to fostering global partnerships, the department has signed inter-institutional cooperation agreements with Kyouritsu Women's University, Kwansei Gakuin University, and Hiroshima University. Engaging in academic exchanges at various levels, students of the department have actively participated in joint training, exchange programs, and summer/winter exchange projects over the past five years, with nearly 100% of undergraduate and master's students and approximately 57% of doctoral students having experienced exchange programs lasting one semester or longer.
Department of German
Department of German commenced admitting undergraduate students majoring in German in 1998, obtained the authority to grant master's degrees in German language and literature in 2003, and acquired the authority to grant doctoral degrees in German language and literature in 2013. Annually, the department admits approximately 18 undergraduate students, 8 master's students, and 1 doctoral student. Currently, the department comprises 9 full-time faculty members, including 3 professors and 4 associate professors, with 78% holding doctoral degrees. Additionally, it has 4 non-tenure-track faculty members, including one high-end foreign expert and three foreign language instructors. Within this second-level discipline, the department offers two research directions: German literature and culture, and German linguistics. Over the past five years, our full-time faculty members have made significant research achievements, publishing 17 articles in core journals, 10 articles in overseas journals, producing 3 monographs, 1 authored work, 20 translations, and 2 textbooks, and securing funding for 6 provincial teaching and research projects. Committed to fostering global partnerships, the department has signed an inter-institutional cooperation agreement with the University of Cologne, sending 6-8 students annually for exchange programs. Over the past five years, a total of 104 students have participated in joint training, exchange programs, or summer/winter exchange projects, with approximately 95% of undergraduate students, 89% of master's students, and 100% of doctoral students having experienced exchange programs lasting one semester or longer.
Department of French
Department of French commenced admitting undergraduate students majoring in French in 2001 and obtained the authority to grant master's degrees in French language and literature in 2014. Annually, it admits approximately 18 undergraduate students and 5 master's students. Currently, the department comprises 8 full-time faculty members, including 2 associate professors, with 75% holding doctoral degrees. Additionally, it has 5 non-tenure-track faculty members, including 4 foreign language instructors and 1 course instructor. Within this second-level discipline, the department offers two research directions: French literature and culture, and French linguistics and language teaching. Over the past five years, the full-time faculty members have made significant research achievements, publishing 16 articles in core journals, and 8 articles in overseas journals, producing 3 monographs, 6 translations, and 2 textbooks, and securing funding for 4 provincial and ministerial-level teaching and research projects. Committed to fostering global partnerships, the department has engaged in various levels of academic exchanges with multiple overseas universities. Over the past five years, a total of 93 students have participated in joint training, exchange programs, or summer/winter exchange projects, with approximately 83% of undergraduate students having experienced exchange programs lasting one semester or longer.
Department of Spanish
Department of Spanish commenced admitting undergraduate students majoring in Spanish in 2016. Annually, it admits approximately 15 undergraduate students. Currently, the department consists of 3 full-time faculty members, all of whom hold doctoral degrees. Additionally, it has 3 non-tenure-track faculty members, including 1 visiting professor, 1 adjunct professor, and 1 foreign language instructor. Dedicated to fostering global partnerships, the department has already signed inter-institutional cooperation agreements with world-renowned universities worldwide. Agreements have been established with Complutense University of Madrid and University of Alcalá, with plans underway to facilitate various levels of academic exchanges and student exchange activities.
MTI Education Center
The MTI Education Center of Renmin University of China is an institution specializing in MTI program. The center is committed to cultivating highly-skilled translation professionals, which meets the needs of China for increasing competitiveness in the global economic integration process and the demands for high-level, practice-oriented, and professional translators in various fields such as social, economic, and cultural development.
The students the center cultivates are expected to be familiar with both Chinese culture and the culture of target country, possess proficient bilingual skills, have a clear understanding of the characteristics and standards of translation and solid skills in translation between Chinese and foreign languages, and be competent to engage in foreign exchange in the fields of finance, commerce, law, international relations, and etc. The center emphasizes the training of advanced professional translation skills with bilingual communication abilities as the base.
The center offers two training directions: English interpreting and English translation. The center aims to cultivate professional translators and interpreters with global perspective, knowledge of the basic terminology, concepts, and workflows in fields of finance, commerce, law, international relations and etc., and competence in doing interpretations and translations for international conferences and communications. The center is able to leverage the rich academic resources, since the School of Foreign Languages, where the center belongs to, has been long engaging in the field of translation studies.
The center currently has 10 professional faculty members, including 4 professors, 3 associate professors, and 3 lecturers. Among them are experts of the Translators Association of China, part-time translation reviewers of People's Literature Publishing House, and directors of the Professional Committee on Classics Translation of the China Association for Comparative Studies of English and Chinese.The faculty members have extensive experience in interpreting and translation practice, and some of them have interdisciplinary background.
The center also employs 6 senior translators and experts annually to teach or give lectures. The simultaneous interpretation laboratory of the center is equipped with the most advanced Bosch simultaneous interpretation equipment. And the professional translation laboratory is equipped with leading CAT systems, namely SDL Trados and Yaxin machine-assisted translation system. The professional library contains a wealth of translation reference books and research literature.
The center has signed cooperation agreements with several translation and language service enterprises and institutions to jointly establish internship bases. At the same time, we have built close connections with universities famous for their MTI program, so as to maintain exchanges with the community and advanced translation education institutions. Graduates of the center have diverse employment choices. They are actively involved in various fields, such as economics, trade, foreign affairs, cultural exchange, and education, within both enterprises and government departments, and are highly recognized and welcomed by employers.
College English Division
The College English Division currently has 42 full-time faculty members. 57% of them have doctoral degree and 16 of them are associate professors. There are also 18 non-tenure-track foreign language instructors. Over the past five years, the full-time teaching staff of the division achieved fruitful research results, publishing 36 papers on core journals, 13 papers on overseas journals, 11 monographs, 6 authored works, 10 translations, and 12 textbooks. They obtained 6 provincial-level teaching and research projects and 1 provincial-level teaching and research award. The division is responsible for offering undergraduate public English courses at both basic and advanced levels. In recent years, significant progress has been made in deepening reform in teaching. In 2013, the Proficiency Standards for English Oral Skills of Renmin University of China were implemented. In 2016, the Proficiency Standards for English Writing Skills of Renmin University of China were released. In 2017, the English Writing Center of Renmin University of China was established.
Postgraduate College English Division
The Postgraduate College English Division currently has 15 full-time faculty members, including 1 professor and 9 associate professors, with a 33% proportion of doctoral degree holders. There are also 3 non-tenure-track foreign language instructors. Over the past five years, the full-time teaching staff of the division has achieved fruitful research results, publishing 10 papers on core journals, 4 monographs, 1 authored work, 3 translations, and 6 textbooks. In addition, the division was granted to hold a provincial-level teaching and research project. The division is responsible for offering public English courses for master and doctoral students. In recent years, significant progress has been made in deepening reform in teaching. In 2016, the Excellence Classes for Academic English in Economics and Management, and the Excellence Classes for Academic English in Arts and Humanities were launched. Meantime, the reform project of teaching practice in the Excellence Classes for Academic English in Politics and Law and the pilot project of teaching practice for professional master's English teaching outlines and teaching plans were initiated.
