DATE: 2024-07-31

The 15th Renmin University of China (RUC) – Fu Jen Catholic University (FJU) Graduate Student Conference recently took place, marking another successful academic collaboration between the two institutions. Organized by FJU’s Department of English Language & Literature and co-hosted by RUC’s Department of English in the School of Foreign Languages, the conference adopted a hybrid format, combining online and in-person participation.

The conference explored the theme “Innovation, Diversity, and Sustainability in Literature and Language Studies” through two sessions. The first session, focused on “Literature Studies,” opened with remarks from Kate Chiwen Liu, Dean of FJU’s College of Foreign Languages and Literatures (CFLL), and Wang Jianhua, Associate Dean of RUC’s School of Foreign Languages. Seven graduate students from both universities presented their research on topics such as literary imagery, modern poetry and social media, narrative structure and character analysis, and gender studies.

Following the first session, the second centered on “Linguistics and Translation Studies” and began with a speech by Ming-i Lydia Tseng, Associate Dean of CFLL at FJU. Six students delved into issues including academic writing and feedback, phonetics, sociolinguistics, and educational technology.

Over ten faculty members from both FJU and RUC’s English departments provided detailed feedback on students’ papers. In addition to individual presentations, two comprehensive discussion panels were held, during which participants exchanged insights on a wide array of research topics and shared their latest findings and methodologies.

Established in 2010, the Renmin-Fu Jen Graduate Student Conference has become a significant platform for academic exchange between the two universities, providing graduate students with an opportunity to present their research while fostering interdisciplinary cooperation and innovation. The 15th conference showcased diverse topics across English language and literature, applied linguistics, translation studies, and educational technology, underscoring both institutions’ academic strengths and innovative approaches in these fields.
